How much water does a WaterBoss use during regeneration?
The Model 700 WaterBoss water softener provides whole-house softening and filtration using as little as 15 gallons of water and only 2.5 lbs. of salt to regenerate.
During recharge (regeneration), it uses approximately 35 to 65 gallons of water, depending on the size of the water softener. While going through regeneration, the motor will not run constantly, it will go through several starts and stops.
This type of brine tank typically has about 11-23 litres (3-6 gallons) of water in it at all times. That works out to about 15-25 cm (6-10 inches) of water. The water will be in your tank even in between regeneration times or cycles. You may not see the water if your salt level is higher than your water level.
If your softener isn't fully draining during the regeneration cycle then your brine tank will eventually fill up with water until the safety float is engaged. The saltwater solution in your brine tank will become too diluted, and your softener will not be able to regenerate properly.
If you have a high efficiency water softener like a Water Boss or an AquaMaster like this one here, because they use very little salt to regenerate, the water level inside that water softener is only two or three inches.
Since most softeners automatically refill the brine tank with water after each regeneration cycle, you will need to drain the tank. You can manually start a regeneration cycle or use a wet vacuum to suck the water up out of the tank.
It is generally agreed upon that regular regenerations are the best, because they keep the resin bed active. This should be every two to three days, although highly efficient softeners may generate every day or even multiple times a day.
If your water softener were to regenerate while you were using water, then your hot water heater will start to fill up with hard water, followed by a series of hard water problems, like white scaling on your appliances and counters. One of the leading causes of poor boiler performance is improper water treatment.
2 to 5 inches of water at the bottom of the salt storage tank is typical.
A typical 1-cubic-foot water softener will use between 6 and 15 pounds of salt dissolved in water per regeneration. For water with iron in it, the higher figure is recommended. The amount is adjustable with the control and brine valves; the brine valve being in the brine tank.
How long does it take a WaterBoss water softener to regenerate?
WaterBoss can regenerate in as little as 15 minutes while conventional softeners can take nearly two hours. Setting the controller is easy: push 1 button to enter your setting number and the computer does the rest.
